Getting a top down view of Big Data
There’s no doubt that the topic of Big Data is on the agenda of Boards of many organisations. But the question we hear the most from executives is “but what does it mean to my business?”
Achieving a holistic view of supply chain risk
The interlinked, complex and global nature of supply chains makes them increasingly vulnerable to a range of risks. Supply chains are too complex to manage with a traditional siloed view, where risk management is still done at different points in the business. What’s needed is a holistic view of risk...
Financial savings are found in big data
Big data has usually been more associated with a marketing officer than a chief finance officer. This is now changing, with chief finance officers starting to see big data technologies as mechanisms for both better handling company accounts and identifying greater financial savings.
Managing in a global complex environment: an iterative approach
As businesses become increasingly complex, the inevitable desire for greater sophistication can actually become the enemy of progress.

Transparency is the key to improving profitability for Outsourcing Partners
In an increasingly challenging European market, there’s a current trend prevailing amongst BPO and IT outsourcing vendors, towards driving profitability through a combination of margin improvement and customer intimacy.
Maximise the value of your outsourcing
According to the World Retail Banking Report, 77 per cent of retail banks now outsource at least one part of their business.
Common industry estimates show that outsourcing provides banks with a saving of 20 – 40 per cent, depending on whether processes are located locally or abroad. And across other industries around the world outsourcing is often the most viable solution for businesses that lack certain specialist skills in their internal teams, but need them to stay ahead of the competition.
Payment-by-Results isn’t just a One-Sided Deal
One of the key predictions for Business Process Services (BPS) outsourcing in 2013 is the increased use of “payments-by-results” in the UK public sector.
This trend is driven by the Government’s aim of shifting the risk of large transformation projects and BPS contracts to its support services partners.
Right data – not big data
FDs should give some attention as to how big data gets into the system.
Handling the business impact of cyber security
We live in a more interconnected and information-rich world than ever before. The media is increasingly publicising the dangers posed by cybercrime, feeding the hype and encouraging alarmist reactions.
What organisations need to realise is that this spending can be targeted to yield real business value if organisations are better informed in assessing their vulnerabilities.
Moving from “What Happened?” to “What’s Happening?”
Investigations into the $US2.3bn loss at UBS incurred by rogue trader Kweku Adoboli have found that a failure in key oversight reporting by an unnamed outsourcing provider was one of the main ways the true risk exposure was hidden.
Cyber defence needs to be acknowledged as a Board-level business risk
It is not possible for business to be conducted today without engaging with the wider cyber world. While this brings with it advantages, such as economies of scale and 24 hour access for some services, it also has inherent risks, as any online system is to some degree open to attacks and disruption.

Effective performance and decision management on complex projects with Serco

Deciding on and taking the right courses of action to achieve the best business outcome is a critical capability in today's world. This is particularly the case for large, complex organizations, in which operations are under increasing pressure to drive out cost, deliver efficiencies, and improve effectiveness, often in a working environment that is weak in providing insight into how the different components of the business affect each other, directly or indirectly, and how these all add up to deliver the outcomes needed.
Causal modelling delivers better business outcomes
UK software technology company MooD International is demonstrating how a new approach to outcome-driven business decision making, driven by a Causal Model, complements the approach taken by more traditional data analytics tools to create real value for organisations, including major system integrators and service providers like HP and Serco.

Outsourcing Governance
In recent years many companies have decided that they are going to concentrate on their core business. They have identified business needs that can be delivered more efficiently by a third party, looked around for an expert in that particular area and given them the contract, essentially saying “just get on with it”. This has worked well in some cases, but how do you know you are getting what you are paying for?
